Gigante selected to represent Australia at Tokyo Olympics

May 20, 2021

We are proud to announce Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank rider Sarah Gigante has been selected to represent Australia in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. The 20-year-old will compete in both the individual time trial and road race.

"It just feels so surreal to be named a member of my first Australian Olympic Team," Gigante said. "Going to the Olympics is one of those things I always dreamed of, but it always seemed like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow - something I hoped really existed but certainly something very far away and a bit of a fantasy. It is such an honor to be on the team alongside such incredible athletes. I am so proud, excited, and thankful for the opportunity."

Back in April, Gigante crashed at Fleche Wallonne, breaking her collarbone, elbow, and fibula. She's recovering quickly and extra motivated by the Olympic news.

"It was my first (and hopefully last) time breaking my leg, and being so impatient, I didn't like the fact that I had to have time completely off the bike. However, the break probably did me good, and now I am back on Zwift and training hard. It's easy to stay motivated and follow the plan with the thought of Tokyo on my mind."

"My main goals for Tokyo are to come into my two races knowing I didn't leave any stones unturned in my preparation and to soak up the feeling of competing at the Olympics. Hopefully, I will do the green and gold proud and enjoy the experience with my teammates. I have no idea what to expect, but I am very excited!"

The Olympic road race will be held on July 25. The 137km course features 2,700 metres of climbing and finishes at the Fuji International Speedway, southwest of Tokyo. The 22.1km time trial, also at Fuji International Speedway, is July 29.

Gigante will join Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank teammate Eri Yonamine, who has been selected to represent the host nation of Japan, at the Olympic start line.

"I am absolutely delighted that Sarah has been named to Australia's Olympic roster for Tokyo 2021," Team TIBCO Silicon Valley Bank Founder Linda Jackson said. "She is a phenomenal athlete and has a huge future in front of her. This is a dream come true for her at the young age of 20; we share in her joy at this announcement and look forward to watching her compete."
