Gigante close second at UCI Esport Worlds, Stephens fourth
December 10, 2020
A 2 a.m. wake up call was no problem for Sarah Gigante, who took a nail-biting second-place finish at the first-ever UCI Esport World Championship on December 9th against some of the best in the business.
Representing Australia on an elite team for the first time, Gigante joined Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank teammates Lauren Stephens (USA) and Kristen Faulkner (USA) on the virtual start line in Watopia and finished 0.064 seconds off the win. Stephens came away with fourth place.
"I didn't fancy my chances on this course before the race, as the climbs were a lot shorter and punchier than I usually like, but I went into the early morning event with an open mind and lots of excitement anyway," Gigante said. "I'm glad I did because it turned out to be a fantastic race for Team Australia after all. Congrats to Ashleigh [Pasio-Moolman] on the well-deserved rainbows and also nice work by my Aussie teammates, as well as my Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank teammates Lauren and Kristen.
"It was a tough year for me, spending so many months in lockdown and unable to race or even ride outside much, so to finish it off with this cool podium is a great feeling. I'm looking forward to a mix of both virtual and real-life racing with my team in 2021."
