The Lockdown Lowdown: TIBCO Silicon Valley Bank Pro Cycling's new weekly quarantine digest

We are living through unprecedented times. Our worlds are turned upside down as we struggle with the impact of Covid-19. Like many people around the world, most of our athletes are on lockdown. They are all healthy, thank goodness, but being an athlete and teammate on lockdown brings its own set of challenges. Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank has created this weekly report, “The Lockdown Lowdown,” to share our athletes’ stories with you. We’ll share how the team stays positive and focused on their goals, what the riders’ self-quarantine environments are like, improvised training ideas and healthy recipe. A healthy mindset: empathy, togetherness and focus

Teamwork is a fundamental pillar of our team in a "normal" year. It's something we place significant value on; we start working on it at camp and build on it through the year. Our normal race calendar provides us with plenty of opportunities to come together as a team. This year is anything but "normal," and it has become even more important, but also more challenging, to bring the team together as one. In a time when physical distance is necessary to keep us all safe, we have to think outside the box for ways to achieve this togetherness. We have athletes and staff in nine different time zones stretching from Australia to Europe. These times zones make it challenging, but we have recently implemented a weekly video call with the whole team so that we can help support each other through this time. On a Zoom call this past Thursday, we heard how the riders are coping with the lockdown. For some, the changes to everyday life appear to be minimal; training outside is allowed, and life seems to be going on as usual. Despite enduring a 14-day quarantine after her recent return from Belgium, Jenelle said life on the Gold Coast in Australia doesn't seem to have changed. People are bustling along on the beach like Covid 19 doesn't exist. On the other hand, Diana, living in Colombia, has police knocking on the door since her arrival from Belgium to make sure that she hasn't left her house during her 15 days of isolation. Afterward, she'll will have to stay home until April 13 as part of a countrywide quarantine restricting any non-essential outdoor activities.

For all of us, the racing, our normal focus, is suspended. Olympic goals have been postponed and uncertainty has taken hold. It's in situations like these where a cohesive team shows its worth. We are each other's support network. While we may be physically separated, we are still a team, and we are always there for each other.

It was wonderful to be able to see the entire team on a video call, and I know each one of us is looking forward to seeing each other on our next call this coming Thursday. Take a few moments (most of us have more of it than we're used to right now) to consider someone who might need your support right now and think about how you can offer it. At home workout routine

Each week we will share with you an indoor training routine from one of our riders. Our goal is to give you ideas that require minimal equipment.

This week’s workout is: “Core and glutes” by Shannon Malseed

3 x 10 leg raises (30 sec rest) 3 x 10 crunches (30 sec rest) 3 x 10 banded glute bridges (30 sec rest) 3 x 10 banded squats (30 sec rest) 30 sec plank 30 sec side plank (each side) Shannon uses this as a warmup to her main gym routine, she does it two times a week! Now you can do it at home too and train like a pro.


This week's healthy recipe

More time at home means more time to bake. We bet you didn’t know that Patricia Schwager, (Swiss time trial champ in 2012-2013, former TTSVB rider from 2014 to 2016, and our current logistics manager) is also a pastry chef!

Banana Cashew muffins by Patricia Schwager

Ingredients: (yields 11-12 muffins) - 2 ripe bananas - 1 egg - 3/4 cup rolled oats - 2 tbsp honey - 1/2 cup peanut or any nut butter of choice - 1/4 tsp baking soda - 1/4 tsp salt - 1/2 cup chopped cashews Instructions: 1) Preheat oven to 350ºF, line a muffin tin with 11-12 muffin liners or grease tin. 2) Add all ingredients, except cashews to the blender and blend until smooth. 3) Pour batter in a bowl and fold in the chopped cashews. Fill the batter evenly into the muffin cups (about 3/4 filled). Sprinkle a few oats on top as decoration. 4) Bake for 25 minutes, every oven is different so be sure to check them. Enjoy! These are great as a snack or ride food.
