Solid Results in Australia: 4th, 7th Overall for Lauren Stephens (USA)
Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank secured solid results in Australia with Lauren Stephens’ 4th place at Towards Zero Race Torquay and 7th at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, the first UCI WorldTour race of 2020.
“I’m really happy with the results so far in Australia, but more importantly how well the team is coming together so early in the season,” said Rachel Hedderman, Head Sports Director for Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank.
A new race on the calendar for 2020, Towards Zero Race Torquay was an 8-lap circuit race with a few punchy hills on the back side of the course. It was on one of these hills that Brodie Chapman launched a breakaway attempt, ending up with a long solo effort in front of the field. Lauren Stephens saw her opportunity and attacked, bridging to Brodie with almost 40k still left in the race.
“We knew the hills would make the race hard, but what we didn’t anticipate was the 100+ degree temperatures throughout the race,” said Lauren Stephens. “Brodie and I worked well together, and it wasn’t until 8k to go that we were caught by two chasers. During the final lap, the combination of heat and hard riding had gotten to me. Normally, I would be disappointed to finish 4th in a break of four, but in the end, I had nothing left and was in shock that I even stayed away from the charging peloton.”
On Saturday, the team faced drastically different weather for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
“It was wet and windy, and with the potential for cross winds as early as 15km into the race, we knew we needed to be ready from the off,” noted Hedderman. “The team worked really well together, protecting Lauren and Sarah and putting them in good position when it counted. Unfortunately we lost Sharlotte and Jenelle in the big crash, but neither were seriously injured and will be lining up for the Sun Tour. Lauren made the selection when things really started kicking off and finished a great 7th place!”
The team’s next race in Australia will be the Herald Sun Tour, which starts on Wednesday, February 5.
