Nina Kessler Wins the Beachrace European Championship

Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank’s Nina Kessler added another team victory to the new season with her win at the Beachrace European Championships. A European Cycling Union (EUC) event, the 50 km race took place along the beach in Dunkirk, France, drawing athletes from across Europe.

“I am really happy with this win and to be the new Beachrace European Champion,” said Kessler. “I hope I can take this good form to the start of the road season in Australia with the team!”

The course covered three laps of a mostly out and back stretch along the packed sand of Dunkirk Beach, with riders opting for wide tires suited for the off-road, challenging terrain.

Kessler said she felt good from the start of the race, with the high speeds and cadence feeling easy. The winds were strong, preventing any breakaways from sticking and splitting the peloton in several smaller packs, with Kessler making the lead group alongside Riejanne Markus, a professional cyclist with the CCC Liv Team and a former Beachrace European Champion.

Kessler waited until the final technical section to make her move. “I knew that I had to go into that technical section in first position, and then go full gas until the finish line,” Kessler added. “I had no idea if Riejanne was close to me or sitting on my wheel, so I just kept going until the finish line. I didn’t even cheer when I crossed the line because was was completely dead after the long sprint! After, I saw that I had a 7-second gap so there would have been enough time to celebrate.”

At the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Brisbane, Australia, Kendall Ryan (USA) scored a bronze medal in the Madison event, together with teammate Christina Birch. On her race, Kendall said, “I am super proud of Christina and I for taking home the bronze medal in the Madison for Team USA. Good legs, good strategy, and good teamwork. We got it done and ended the trip on a high.”

Sharlotte Lucas: 3rd at New Zealand’s Criterium Championships

At New Zealand’s 2020 Criterium National Championships, which took place this past November, Sharlotte Lucas (NZL) sprinted to an early season bronze medal. “While I wanted the win, I recognize that I am in the off season. I lacked the fast legs I needed in the sprint, especially against track riders gearing up for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup races. But I am happy with the result, and am looking forward to the season when it kicks off this January!”
