Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank’s Brodie Chapman (AUS) climbed to 6th place overall at the Amgen Tour of California, finishing in the top 10 on every stage. The UCI World Tour stage race was the most challenging in the event’s history, with three stages covering over 20,800 feet of climbing, including a beyond category climb up Mt. Baldy.
“The tour of California was definitely the toughest edition of the race yet,” said Rachel Hedderman Program Manager and Head Sports Director of Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank. “With three challenging stages, it was not one for the feint hearted. The team stepped up to the challenge, placing Brodie in the top 10 on every stage and 6th overall. It is great to see that in all continents we are racing on, the team is showing itself to be competitive with the best in the world.”
The race started in Ventura, Kendall Ryan’s hometown, and progressed through the San Gabriel Mountains above Santa Clarita before concluding in Pasadena. On the final stage, Chapman launched into a 15-rider breakaway on the climb to Angeles Forest Highway, gaining a 45-second advantage on the field. The move was promising, as Chapman was the highest-placed rider in the group, but race leader Anna van der Breggen drove the pace to close the gap.
“The Amgen Tour of California was an incredibly strong field this year, and paired with the challenging terrain, it made the racing dynamic and aggressive,” said Brodie Chapman. “While I didn’t get the best out of myself on Mt. Baldy on the second stage, I had a really good ride on stage three and was able to be active in the race.
"I had the full support of the team, not only during the racing but also throughout the lead up into the race. It was cool to have our team owner Linda Jackson there on the roadside, and seeing my name on the road in chalk was really great!"
Chapman continued, "Anna van Der Breggen is truly a world class athlete, and I’m sure I speak for many of us - she’s just inspiring! What made the whole race a good experience was racing in Kendall’s hometown. She showed us around, and we felt like a class favourite with how the locals cheered for her and the Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank ensemble.”
With the Amgen Tour of California held in Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank’s home state, many of the team’s supporters and partners were able to watch the World Tour event in person. Maxxis, Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank’s tire sponsor, had two days in the team car to get an even closer look at the racing action.
“I am so thrilled to see the team’s continued results in these World Tour races,” added Linda Jackson. “It was especially meaningful to be on course with some of our partners and our incredible, supportive community.”
