Team TIBCO–Silicon Valley Bank is in New Mexico to compete in one of North America’s premiere bike races, the UCI-rated Tour of the Gila.
The 31st edition of the event is a five-stage race located in and around Silver City, New Mexico from April 19th through April 23rd. The event is characterized by over 9,000 feet of climbing with technical descents in the gorgeous Gila wilderness.
For the first time in history, stage 1 will have a flat finish on Whitewater Mesa. The first stage has always finished up the 6.7-mile Mogollon climb that peaks at a 19-percent gradient, but scheduled road improvements in the historic town of Mogollon necessitated the route change.
The flatter start will level the playing field a bit, but with two additional, hilly road stages, a long time trial characterized by gusty winds and a technical criterium; it is still a tough Tour. The final stage named “The Gila Monster” is made is 65.9 miles with over 5,600 feet of climbing.
Ed Beamon - Sports Director:
"Because of its high altitude and strenuous climbs, the Tour of the Gila is a special race. Every day is a challenge and you need to be a strong all around rider with great climbing skills to stay competitive.
The long individual Time Trial should play well for us and I hope it will put us in a position with several riders to contest the overall GC. Lauren Stephens and Brie Walle have had good results on this course and I expect Kate Buss will feature in the Time Trial as well”
