Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank riders set to start Women’s World Tour
After the conclusion of its team camp in California last week, Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank is now in Italy preparing for some of the toughest racing in the world. The team will take part in the first three UCI Women’s World Tour events of 2017: Strade Bianche (Italy, March, 4th) Ronde van Drenthe (Netherlands, March 11th ) and Trofeo Alfredo Binda back in Italy on March 18th.
Strade Bianche is a twisty and undulating race through the beautiful Tuscany countryside. Named after the “white streets” or gravel sections that the riders traverse, the 127 kilometer race has eight gravel sections for a total of nearly 30 kilometers of dirt roads. There are numerous short punchy hills, some with double digit gradients.
The final 1.1 kilometer gravel section features some steep descents followed by a short, steep climb. At only 12 kilometers to the finish in Piazza del Campo, Siena, this section could well be the last place for attacks. The finish includes a steep, narrow climb that leads into massive crowds on the Piazza.
In dry weather this iconic race is notorious for the dust that rises from the gravel. If it is wet and rainy, which is forecast for Saturday, the gravel sectors can turn to sticky mud.
Sports Director Ed Beamon:
“We are thrilled to be taking part in the opening round of the Women’s World Tour in Siena. We’ve had the chance to ride most of the course checking out the iconic dirt sections and are looking forward to race day. We’ll be racing on our new Aerosport Edco Umbria Light wheels with Maxxis 28mm Velocita tires. I think this is going to be the perfect combination to handle the rough roads and steep pitches the women will need to negotiate on Saturday.”
