(2) Valley of the Sun: Debut win for Ingrid Drexel
Former Mexican Champion Ingrid Drexel, 23 years old, scored her first win for Team TIBCO – Silicon Valley Bank today, taking stage two of the Valley of the Sun stage race.
Under miserable weather conditions, Kendall Ryan and Jennifer Tetrick initiated an early six-rider break with the purpose of putting pressure on the race leader, Leah Thomas, and moving Brianna Walle and Lauren Stephens up in the overall classification. Once the break was established, Team TIBCO – Silicon Valley Bank started attacking. Drexel and one other rider were able to bridge to the leading group and give the TIBCO-SVB riders an added advantage.
In the latter stages of the race, Heather Fischer and Kate Buss launched another escape from the field in an attempt to put more pressure on the race leader’s team. In the final two kilometers Drexel responded to an attack in the lead group and was able to capitalize on the aggressive move to sprint to the victory.
A very happy DS Ed Beamon: “The girls were great today. We had a specific plan; their execution was flawless, communication superb, and the finale was very exciting. Our goal was to move up in the overall classification but our second goal was to win the stage.”
Ingrid said after her victory “I am really excited and thrilled to take the win. It’s not only my first win with Team TIBCO – Silicon Valley Bank but also my first in the USA.”
The final stage tomorrow is a 40-minute criterium in downtown Phoenix where Team TIBCO – Silicon Valley bank will again try and animate the stage to take over the lead.
