Rather than featuring a longer time trial, this year’s race offers a shorter, 3.8-kilometer prologue with technical corners and turns that create opportunities for powerful, explosive riders.

The first stage of the race (from Stramproy to Weert) is flat, favoring a sprint finish, but winds along the course have the potential to break up the peloton. Stage 2 includes four laps of a flat, 29.1km circuit around Gennep and is also expected to end in a sprint finish.

The hardest and longest stage of the event comes on Stage 3, where riders will face five laps of a hilly circuit, totaling 156.8km. Each lap includes a climb up the Motieweg, a 760-meter ascent at a 5% grade.

Covering 135.6km from Arnhem to Nijmegen, Stage 4 features more climbing. The first 50km have only a few rolling hills, including the Hoge Veluwe as well as the Grebbeberg. The most challenging climb of the day is the Oude Holleweg, at 860 metres and an average gradient of 8.6%. With the Oude Holleweg only 11km from the finish and sprint and mountain points on the line at the top, this could be the launch point for the winning move of the race.

The final stage, at 154.8km, brings the peloton from Nijmegen back to Arnhem. The stage is mostly flat until the finishing circuits, where riders will face three laps of a 9km circuit, with each lap including a 4% climb up the Apeldoornseweg.

Follow the 2019 Boels Ladies Tour:

Tuesday, September 3

Prologue - Sittard — Geleen (3.8km)

Wednesday, September 4

Stage 1 - Stramproy — Weert (123.0km)

Thursday, September 5

Stage 2 - Gennep – Gennep (113.7km)

Friday, September 6

Stage 3 - Nijverdal – Nijverdal (156.8km)

Saturday, September 7

Stage 4 - Arnhem – Nijmegen (135.6km)

Sunday, September 8

Stage 5 - Nijmegen – Arnhem (154.8km)

Live video broadcast is available on regional broadcasters, including L1, Omroep Gelderland, RTV Oost and Podium TV, and Eurosport 1. Learn More.

To follow the race via Twitter, use @UCI_WWT and @LadiesTour on Twitter.

Race Preview: Grand Prix de Plouay

Exciting, Aggressive Racing is on Tap at the next UCI World Tour EventTeam TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank is in France for the next stop on the UCI Women’s World Tour calendar: the Grand Prix de Plouay. This year’s 128-kilometer course features six long laps of 16.7 kilometers and two shorter laps of 13.9 kilometers, with each lap including the Côte du Lézot (1km at 4.6%) and the steeper Côte de Ty Marrec (1.1km at 6.5%).

The undulating terrain and multiple climbs presents opportunities for climbers and technically savvy riders. The race drew top riders from around the world for its classic setting on the scenic gravel roads surrounding Steamboat Springs and its sizable prize purse with equal payout. Both Chapman and Stephens finished the 141-mile race, which included over 9,000 feet of climbing, in under 7 hours, with Chapman claiming the top place for women and 15th overall. Stephens, a veteran of gravel racing, experienced an untimely flat around 60 miles into the race and had to chase back to the field.

“The SBT GRVL Race was an awesome opportunity,” said Chapman. "Its really cool that we as professional road cyclists get to mix up our program with something as challenging and different as gravel racing. This was my first ‘official’ gravel race, and I will admit I was a bit apprehensive about what to expect out of myself, at altitude, coming from a block of European racing and not to mention the stacked and experienced gravel field here in the USA."

"I like long races, and I like gravel, so I was really looking forward to seeing how it would play out.

"My teammate Lauren Stephens was really well prepared, and this gave me so much confidence and calm, she knows the scene and is in really great shape.

“After Lauren got an untimely flat, I just rode with the leading men’s group as long as possible, following surges but also being conservative at every opportunity. Once I had a small working group, we rolled turns to the finish. It was a an awesome course, incredible landscapes and fantastic organisation.

“It was special to ride this race as a team, with everything from planning and speculating the days before the race, team mechanic support and being able to represent Team TIBCO -Silicon Valley Bank on the top step is extra special when it is at ‘home’ in the USA.”

“Yesterday was an exciting day,” said Lauren Stephens. “I’ve put a lot of energy into preparing for this race. I was devastated when I flatted 60 miles into the 140 mile race. But luckily I got back on the bike quickly with a little help from my husband, Mat. Knowing I had Brodie up the road with the front group of men, I settled into my own rhythm and focused on attempting to get back but also riding within myself. In the end Brodie took the win, and I took the overall QOM.”

Brodie Chapman and Lauren Stephens to Race Gravel this Weekend

Brodie Chapman (AUS) and Lauren Stephens (USA) are taking the racing action off-road tomorrow. Riders will then head into three shorter laps of 11km, with a 1km ascent of Hägrungabakken each lap. Rather than settle for 2nd place, the team went all-in to secure the overall victory.

“On the last day, I was down in the overall GC competition, with only 4 seconds separating me and the yellow jersey,” Chapman explained. “I took a gamble to create some distance on the field and managed to break away with a small group. I attacked again in one last dig to force the gap to remain, but the yellow then attacked over the top of me, and I was way too gassed to jump again. It was an impressive defense of the yellow jersey.”

“We raced as a team, with everyone taking a part animating the race. I feel so proud to be part of this team!”

“This was my first time at BC Superweek,” Kessler continued. “The team had already told me all about the race, and I was really looking forward to racing here. I really like racing crits in the Netherlands, but I’ve heard that criteriums are different in North America - that they’re really hard, and riders are strong and constantly attacking. At first I was nervous, but we really came together as a team.

“At PoCo Grand Prix, Sharlotte did a great lead-out, and I had Kendall on my wheel. It was really cool to win, and that Kendall got 2nd. But we couldn’t have pulled it off without Sharlotte. At the Tour de White Rock Road Race, we could tell that Emily (Marcolini) was ready to go. At the start, she attacked and stayed away for two laps by herself. That was a good opportunity for us to warm up and keep the pressure off of us. In the end of the race, a small group attacked, and I was able to bridge to the first group. There was a big tailwind, so I started my attack early. I could see them coming up the hill behind me, so I shifted my gear one more time and sped up to win the race!”

Gravel Racing

In the USA, Lauren Stephens (USA) also claimed 2nd place at the well-known Crusher in the Tushar gravel race, a grueling event with varying, rough terrain and over 10,000 feet of climbing in about 65 miles. After strong showings in Gila and Yorkshire, I believe we are well prepared and ready to race, and I’m looking forward to some exciting competition!”

“Starting and finishing the first stage of the 2019 Women’s Amgen Tour of California in Ventura is a big deal for me and my sister, Alexis Ryan,” said Kendall Ryan. “This will be the first time I’ve ever raced in my hometown, let alone a World Tour Race. Navigating the roads I’m most familiar with in a huge peloton is going to be an amazing sensation. No Strava records will be safe in the coming days.”

Stage One of the Tour of California starts and finishes in Ventura. The 60-mile course features six QOMs and a total of almost 5,000 feet of climbing through its scenic route through the Ojai Valley and along the coastal town of Carpinteria before returning to Ventura. With the last hill just three miles from the finish - a .8 mile climb to the Serra Cross - it will be a dynamic finish, with any number of possibilities for the last sprint.

Stage Two covers just 46 miles but includes a grueling climb up Mt. Baldy. With over 7,300 feet of climbing, the course traverses through the San Gabriel Mountains, and the beyond category ascent is where climbers like Brodie Chapman can shine.

Stage Three is the longest stage, covering 78.3 miles and is nearly identical to the men’s course. This will be the first time the women’s race concludes in Southern California, starting in Santa Clarita and finishing at the iconic Rose Bowl. The course is anything but easy, as it passes through the San Gabriel Mountains before making its final descent into Pasadena.

Follow the Race

Check out race highlights on the Tour Tracker, available here. Follow on Twitter. @AmgenTOC@UCI_WWT#UCIWWT

Timing of the races:

Stage 1: Ventura Distance: 60 mi / 96.5 km Start Time: 12:10 PM PST Est. The plan was executed perfectly. I was fed, encouraged and led out like a sprint train to the base of the final climb where I just went and did my thing.

“I was really nervous that we might lose the jersey - but the team effort to fight for the win paid off in the end. I think I had the freshest legs out of the entire peloton! Rachel was really confident in my ability. I had incredible staff support as well - from the adjustments and massages all week by Michael San Jose to incredible mechanic work on our Fuji Bikes by Stef.

“Crossing the line like I did today wouldn’t have been possible without them. It was such a fantastic race, well organised, an awesome community and very tough competition.

“We don’t want easy wins, we thrive when we get to fight! I am really proud to do this on ‘home’ soil for our American team.”

“It was definitely one of the most exciting races of recent years, with the jersey changing hands every day,” said Rachel Hedderman, Head Sports Director for Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank.

"With the strength of the TWENTY20 Team and just one second separating 1st and 2nd going into the final stage, we knew we had a real battle on our hands that would take a full team effort to win. The team did a perfect job of protecting Brodie through the stage and delivering her to the bottom of the climb in great position and then it was up to Brodie to do her thing.

“It was really special to see Brodie conquer the Gila monster stage and capture the overall race victory. The team was fully committed the entire race, and I’m looking forward to carrying the momentum into the Tour of California.”

Race Report: How It Happened

It was a nail biter of a finish, with Chapman and Chloé Dygert Owen going back and forth over the last three days of racing. Chapman scored the victory on the first stage, and then, a breakaway got away from the field on the second day, putting Chapman down to second overall.

Chapman’s outstanding time trial, second only to Dygert Owen, put Chapman back in the overall lead - but only by a few seconds. In the criterium, Chapman and the team had to chase the valuable bonus seconds, but Dygert Owen claimed just enough seconds to edge ahead of Chapman by a single second.

On the final stage, the team rallied around Chapman, keeping her legs fresh to attack the final climb, a strategy that worked flawlessly. Chapman set her own pace up the final climb and eventually distanced all of her rivals and caught the day’s breakaway. But with a maximum lead of 1:15 over the chasing group containing red jersey Dygert Owen and only a 6 second gap with 2km to go, it was a fight all the way to the line.

“I’m really proud of how the team is riding together,” said Linda Jackson, Founder of Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank. “Thanks to the support of our partners and sponsors, we are able to run a solid program both here in North America and in Europe. Brodie’s result today, coupled with Alison Jackson’s 3rd place at the Tour de Yorkshire on Friday, shows the diversity and depth of our team. I’m looking forward to our next set of UCI World Tour races: the Tour of Chongming Island and the Amgen Tour of California.”

Alison Jackson Scores 3rd on the First Stage of the Asda Tour de Yorkshire

Photo: Anton Vos May 3, 2019 — Today, Alison Jackson (CAN) finished third in the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. Finishing just below the Mogollon ghost town, the climb pitches up to 15 percent in places and will certainly set the tone for the next four days of racing.

The second stage, featuring 120.7 kilometers on a rolling course, starts and finishes at Fort Bayard, a historic military hospital. With 5,854 feet of climbing and three Cat 3 QOM’s, the race often concludes in a bunch sprint from a whittled down field of riders. Canadian Lex Albrecht won Stage 2 in 2017’s edition of the race.

On day 3, riders head to the Tyrone time trial course for an an out-and-back 26-kilometer TT that favors power riders and climbers, depending on the wind conditions. The first 4.7km is a steady climb into rolling hills before the turnaround - and what can be a fast descent back to the finish.

Held in downtown Silver City, the criterium on the fourth stage features a climb on the back stretch that leads to a fast descent into the final corner before a slightly rising finish. The criterium will feature a live feed video for those wanting to watch the race in action.

The final day is where the general classification will ultimately be determined. It’s the ‘Gila Monster’ stage, starting in Silver City and heading into the historic Gila Cliff Dwelling National Monument, before a final climb back to Pinos Altos for the finish. This is a heavy climbing course with 5,610 feet of climbing and just 4,714 feet of descending, and three QOMs on course (one Cat 2, and two Cat 3 climbs). It will certainly be a stage for the climbers.

With a solid group of climbers and strong riders, Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank will be looking for opportunities and has a few cards to play, with a combination of power riders and strong climbers, including Brodie Chapman who recently scored a top 10 at Flèche Wallonne.

Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank will also be racing the Tour of Yorkshire, starting Friday, May 3.

To Follow Tour of the Gila: Wednesday - Sunday (May 1-5) Twitter: #Gila2019@TouroftheGila Facebook: @TouroftheGila Website: https://tourofthegila.com/

Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank Ready for 3rd World Tour Race in a Week: Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Packing in five races in April, Silicon Valley Bank is ready for their next event: Sunday’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the team’s third World Tour race in one week.
